What it is:
Hugely influential bike, named after a Japanese sword. Looks fantastic and handles better than the stock GSX, on which it was based. Not a big seller in the Eighties due to its cutting-edge looks, but now an acknowledged classic. Starting to get expensive.
Others in its family tree:
Mechanically, it was simply a GSX1100. A rarer 1000cc proddie racer with flatslide carbs was also made – and looks identical. Its distinctive Target Design styling is still used on Japan-only 400cc and 250cc replicas. The 550/650/750 Katanas are pale imitations.
It’s good because:
It does 145mph, handles, stops (just), and its styling gets better and better with age.
It’s bad because:
Bodywork and trim parts are very expensive.
Other Alternatives:
None if you want that combination of performance, ability and looks. Nothing else comes close.
